I. pubescens is a shrub native to southern China with pubescent (hairy) young branches and leaves, and its root is the part used medicinally in TCM. I. aquifolium is a European species used primarily in Western herbalism for different indications. Chemically, I. pubescens is characterized by triterpenoid saponins (ilexsaponins) and phenolic acids, while I. aquifolium contains different saponin profiles. In TCM, Mao Dong Qing is used specifically according to pattern differentiation — for Heat-toxin, Blood stasis, and Damp-Heat patterns. The two species are not interchangeable, and their medicinal properties should be considered distinct within their respective traditions.
