What Is Lian Qiao
Lian Qiao (Fructus Forsythiae) is the dried fruit of Forsythia suspensa (Thunb.) Vahl, a deciduous shrub in the family Oleaceae (olive family). In the traditional TCM classification system, Lian Qiao is considered bitter in flavor with a slightly cold nature. Botanical description: Forsythia suspensa is an upright, spreading deciduous shrub growing 1–3 meters tall. The branches are hollow, yellowish-brown, and may be upright or arching. The leaves are opposite, ovate to broadly ovate, 3–10 cm long and 2–5 cm wide, with a serrated margin and a pointed apex. The flowers are bright yellow, appearing in early spring before the leaves, with a bell-shaped corolla 1–2.5 cm long, typically with four petals. The fruit is a capsule that is ovoid to ellipsoidal, 1–2.5 cm long, with a pointed tip and several longitudinal ridges.
