What Is Long Dan
Long Dan (Gentianae Radix et Rhizoma) is the dried root and rhizome of Gentiana scabra Bunge, a perennial herbaceous plant in the family Gentianaceae (gentian family). In the traditional TCM classification system, Long Dan is considered severely bitter in flavor with a cold nature. The plant produces striking deep blue to violet-blue bell-shaped flowers in autumn, often spotted inside the corolla tube. The corolla is 4–5 cm long with five lobes. The root system is well-developed, with a short rhizome bearing numerous slender, fascicled roots 10–20 cm long. The roots are yellowish-brown to dark brown externally, with a bitter taste and a faint characteristic odor. The roots and rhizomes are harvested in autumn after the aerial parts have withered, then cleaned, removing the stem bases, and dried in the sun.
Habitat and cultivation: G. scabra is native to northeastern China, including the provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, and Inner Mongolia, as well as Japan, Korea, and parts of Russia. (2017) investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of gentiopicroside in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated macrophages and demonstrated that it significantly reduced the production of pro-inflammatory mediators including TNF-alpha, IL-6, and nitric oxide through suppression of the NF-kappaB and MAPK signaling pathways (PMID: 28630032). Zhao et al. (2015) reported that gentiopicroside exhibited analgesic effects in rodent models of inflammatory and neuropathic pain through modulation of central pain signaling pathways (PMID: 25445241). Liu et al. Even in cases where Long Dan is indicated, it is typically combined with Spleen-tonifying and Qi-warming herbs to mitigate its adverse effects on digestion. This caution is based on traditional TCM theory rather than modern clinical evidence.
Yin deficiency with empty Heat: Because Long Dan is severely bitter, cold, and downward-draining, it may further deplete Yin fluids in individuals with Yin deficiency patterns characterized by dry mouth, night sweats, a red tongue with little coating, and a thin, rapid pulse.
