Gan Lan He and Gan Lan both come from the same plant, <em>Canarium album</em> Raeusch. (Burseraceae), but they refer to different parts used in TCM practice. Gan Lan He refers specifically to the seed (kernel) of the Chinese olive, which is the inner part of the fruit stone after the outer flesh has been removed. It is primarily used for its Heat-clearing, toxicity-resolving, throat-soothing, and cough-relieving properties. Gan Lan refers to the fresh or dried fruit (including the fleshy outer part), which is more commonly used for Heat-clearing, detoxification, and thirst-relieving properties, particularly for alcohol toxicity and fish poisoning. While both share some overlapping constituents and uses, Gan Lan He is more strongly associated with throat and Lung conditions, while Gan Lan is more strongly associated with digestive and detoxification uses. They are considered related but distinct medicinal materials in the TCM tradition.
