What is the difference between Feng Xiang Shu Ye and Feng Xiang Zhi (Liquidambar resin)?
Feng Xiang Shu Ye (Liquidambar formosana leaf) and Feng Xiang Zhi (Liquidambar resin, also known as Su He Xiang or storax-related resin) are derived from the same botanical genus but from different plant parts and have distinct traditional uses. Feng Xiang Shu Ye is the leaf, traditionally used for dispelling Wind-Damp, moving Qi, and stopping pain, with applications in painful obstruction and skin conditions. Feng Xiang Zhi is the resinous exudate from the tree trunk, traditionally used for promoting blood circulation, relieving pain, and detoxifying, with applications in traumatic injury, sores, and abscesses. While both share some overlapping uses for pain and trauma, they are considered distinct medicinal materials in the TCM tradition and are not interchangeable without careful consideration of the intended therapeutic context.
