Botanical description: Suan Zao Ren is the dried ripe seed of Ziziphus jujuba Mill. var. spinosa (Bunge) Hu ex H.F. Chou (Rhamnaceae), a spiny shrub or small tree. The fruit is harvested in late autumn when ripe, the flesh is removed, and the seeds are cleaned and dried. The dried seed is flattened-ovoid, reddish-brown to purplish-brown, with a smooth, glossy surface.
