What does modern research say about Qing Ye Dan?
Modern research on Qing Ye Dan (Swertia mileensis) has focused primarily on its hepatoprotective and choleretic properties. The secoiridoid glycosides swertiamarin and gentiopicroside have been studied for their ability to protect liver cells from toxin-induced damage, stimulate bile production, and reduce liver inflammation in animal models. Oleanolic acid has been extensively investigated for its hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. Mangiferin and xanthones have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potential antidiabetic activities in pre-clinical research. Some studies have investigated the anti-hepatitis B virus potential of Swertia extracts. However, there are no large-scale, randomized, controlled clinical trials that establish Qing Ye Dan as an effective treatment for any specific human liver or gallbladder disease. The existing evidence is preliminary and should not be interpreted as support for clinical efficacy.
