Mi Hou Li Gen comes from Actinidia arguta, commonly known as the hardy kiwi, baby kiwi, or kiwiberry. A. arguta is a close relative of the common fuzzy kiwi (Actinidia chinensis var. deliciosa), which produces the familiar commercial kiwi fruit. Both belong to the genus Actinidia within the family Actinidiaceae. A. arguta produces smaller, grape-sized fruits with smooth, edible skin, which are sweeter than common kiwis. While the fruits of both species are consumed as food, the root bark of A. arguta has been used in traditional medicine. The chemical profiles of the root bark and the fruit are very different: the root bark is rich in triterpenes and polyphenols, while the fruit is rich in vitamin C, actinidin (a proteolytic enzyme), and dietary fiber. The medicinal use of the root bark is entirely separate from the dietary use of the fruit.
