What is the difference between Ci Xian Cai and Xian Cai (Amaranthus tricolor)?
Ci Xian Cai (Amaranthus spinosus) and Xian Cai (Amaranthus tricolor, also known as Yin Chai or edible amaranth) are closely related species within the Amaranthaceae family but have distinct traditional uses and botanical characteristics. Ci Xian Cai is distinguished by the presence of sharp spines at the leaf axils and is primarily used medicinally for clearing Heat, resolving toxicity, cooling Blood, and stopping bleeding. Xian Cai is a popular leafy vegetable with larger, more tender leaves and no spines; it is primarily used as a food and mild medicinal for clearing Heat and promoting bowel movement. While both share some overlapping Heat-clearing properties, Ci Xian Cai is considered stronger medicinally and is used specifically for toxicity and bleeding conditions, whereas Xian Cai is valued more as a nutritious food with mild cooling properties.
